A wise man said...

... that "church is not church if you're only meeting with a few of your close friends who tend to think like you do."

"Why not?" I asked. "Isn't church just where two or more are gathered?"

"No," He replied. "You need the mocker, the hard to get along with, the weak in your group. Otherwise, it's not a community. They're simply reflections of you."

"A community is only as strong as its weakest link. In the kingdom of God, we don't eat our weak. We don't throw them overboard with the hopes of getting stronger that way. Instead, we pick them up and give them our strength. That's what is different about us."

"In many cases, that weak person creates the community. People don't pull together to breeze through the easy. People pull together when they're confronted with something hard. It's hard to love those who are difficult to get along with. In your little group of people like you, when are you challenged to lay your life down? When are you challenged to put yourself aside?"

I didn't have an answer.

But I did realize that I might end up being the mocker... the hard to get along with... the weak. I am hoping that, should I decide to do more than just meet with my few friends who think like me, that I will not be thrown overboard.

My Birthday
Well, my birthday is tomorrow. I'll be 35...but I still want toys. Everytime this thing comes around I find that my desire for unaffordable, expensive gifts leads me to experience the first two noble truths of Buddhism. I also realize how materialistic I am.

That being said, I only need two more people to sign up and complete an offer to get my free Ipod.

Special Guest
tomorrow night at the house

We'll meet tomorrow night at St. Patrick's again (click the link on the previous post for a map), and Terry's going to lead us in another evening prayer service.

For those of you who grew up as I did in conservative, evangelical, independent protestant churches, you probably were brought up with an extreme lack of this type of thing and maybe even a suspicion of ritual for ritual's sake. I must say that I found the prayer service last week to be a breath of fresh air. If anything else, it was very cool knowing that we were sharing a common element with Christians far away and long gone, as it has been done by Christians all over the world and extends back to the days of the early church.

ALSO, tomorrow night, we have the pleasure of hearing from Tom Mohn, who Jimmy calls the "Forrest Gump" of Christianity ('cuz he's been everywhere and seen it all). I have no idea what he's going to talk about, but I've heard him speak often enough to know that it'll be good.

Terry wants to try to start the prayer service around 6:30, so if you come, try to get there a few minutes earlier than normal. Expect to be done around 8:30 or 9.

See you tomorrow.

House o' Zen
Tonight's gathering is going to be at St. Patrick's Episcopal church in Broken Arrow at 6:30. Terry is going to lead us in the Evening Prayer starting about 6:45, then we'll continue our look at how the Scriptures came to us until around 7:15-9:00 pm. We'll review the OT textual history and then start discussing the NT.
